Prologue: After the Fact

The interrogation room was small with walls that were painted an off-white color. On one wall, there was a large rectangular tinted mirror that reflected the room; a two-way mirror. It was dark; the only light came from an overhanging ceiling fixture. Inside the room, was a table and two chairs. There was only one door, which was locked. The air felt cold against Stargazer’s skin. He heard the hum of the air conditioner above his head. He sat in the steel chair, his elbows against the steel table. He was hunched forward, his interlaced fingers resting against his lips. He had his eyes close.

“Ok, let make this simple.” The rough, authoritative voice of Detective Leland broke the quiet in the room. He was slouching in the chair across from Stargazer, right leg resting atop the left leg. His skin, wrinkled and crinkly, portrayed age. He looked casual, sitting in his seat, but by the way he was speaking, you could tell that he was serious. He was an experienced detective. “Why’d you do it?” He asked the question coldly and callously, but there was also a hint of confidence in his voice. He was so confident in himself that it almost infuriated Stargazer.

Stargazer inhaled deeply. He felt his irritation rise, but, as always, he would never allow for his anger to take control. He exhaled slowly and, without opening his eyes, spoke. “My apologies, detective. I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He was as gentlemanly and polite as ever.

Detective Drake, who was standing beside his partner, slammed the palms of his hands on the table with much force that the table shook underneath Stargazer, yet he didn’t flinch or showed any signs of reacting to the sudden loud noise. “YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT!” The detective shouted at him. Unlike his partner, this detective was lively, more energetic. His had a handsome appearance, comprising of vivid eyes, lavish hair, and a smooth, round face. He was a younger, less experienced detective. The anger and frustration was evident in his voice, but even as he was shouting, the same confidence that was heard in his partner’s voice was as clear as day; he, too, was convinced. “WHY DID YOU KILLED THEM?!”

“Detective, I didn’t kill anyone.” Stargazer said in a suave and sophisticated tone of voice, his eyes still closed. His eyebrows began to knit at the center of his forehead. The stress of the situation was clearly getting to him, and yet, he still refused to show it. He would not give the detectives the satisfaction of seeing him act out in anger.

“We have evidence that proves that you do it!” Shouted the younger detective. “So, cut the bull and TELL US WHY YOU KILLED THEM!” As he yelled, he brought his hands up and slammed them down on the table again, creating yet another loud, metallic banging noise. Stargazer didn’t speak. This made the detective very angry. He walked around the edge of the table and came to stand beside Stargazer. He leaned against the table with one hand while staring daggers at Stargazer. Stargazer didn’t look up at him. “You want to make this harder for myself?” The detective asked. When Stargazer didn’t answer, he leaned forward, close enough that his lips were centimeters from Stargazer’s left ear. “Well, punk?”

“Let’s rephrase the question.” Detective Leland said before he straightened himself. He moved his chair closer to the table and then placed his elbows on it. He rested his chin on the knuckles of his hands. He eyed Stargazer with a curious expression; there was almost a smile on his face. “How’d you do it? I’ll be honest, we are all very curious.”

Stargazer inhaled again; he could feel his blood boiling so hot that it was changing into steam. All this time, he was just trying to help, to be a good Samaritan, to contribute to society. Was this his punishment for trying to be something he wasn’t? Would this always going to happen whenever he did something good? Was his brother right about everything? He exhaled slowly; he couldn’t let those doubts cloud his mind. “I couldn’t had done what you’re implying.” He said matter-of-factly.

“And why not?” Asked the older detective. “Can you prove to us that you could had done it?”

“Yeah!” Shouted Detective Drake. “Prove that you didn’t do it! Right here, right now!”

Stargazer strengthened himself in his seat, but his head was hung low. He gently ran a finger through his fringe, temporary moving it to the side before letting it fall back into place. For a moment, he wondered how many people were watching this exchange behind the two-way mirror. Was his family watching him? What would they think of him after the interrogation? Would they think less of him?

“Sir.” The older detective said in an irritated tone of voice. He was growing impatient. “Can you prove you didn’t do it?”

Stargazer lifted his head and open his eyes. His beautiful, mysterious, otherworldly, and sightless eyes.
After a lot of thinking, I decided that I would share my new mystery with everyone here. In case you haven't read my journal entries, than I'll fill you in. This is the first book of a series of mystery books that I am writing. I have yet to write a mystery novel, eventhough I love mysteries. I always wanted to write a mystery with a blind protagonist.

Here is the summary of the novel: Aiden Everhart, a private detective that lived and worked in the city of Las Vegas, and his wife, Petunia Everhart, a writer who mostly wrote mystery and thriller novels, lived a happy, stable life with their three children. Bradley, the eldest child, and the first-born son, was the most popular student in his school. Firefly, the youngest child, was sharp-tongued, but passionate about helping others. Then there was Stargazer, the second-born son, and the middle child. Stargazer was born prematurely, so his eyes didn’t have time to develop. His eyes don’t have pupils, rendering his completely blind.

His parents named him Stargazer because his eyes reminded them of a starry night sky. Despite his obvious disability, his parents loved him with all their hearts, and, although he couldn’t see, Stargazer was very smart. With the help and protection of Firefly, he was able to go to public school, cook, play chess, and even graduated high school with a GPA of 4.0.
One afternoon, Aiden and Petunia, as part of their 20th wedding anniversary, went to broad a plane to Europe and left Bradley, who was eighteen at the time, and still in college, in charge of Stargazer, Firefly, and the house. A day later, word is sent to the children that the plane that was carrying their parents crashed landed into the ocean. After the funeral, Bradley, overcome with rage, exploded at Stargazer. Later that night, he announced that he would be sending Stargazer, seventeen at the time, to a college in New York.

So, Stargazer spent four years in New York. He met a girl named Ophelia, a gothic girl who also loss her parents, never finished high school, and was living with her childish uncle. After graduating college with a Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, he married Ophelia. The couple brought an old van and turn it to a bookmobile. They began their lives as traveling librarians, bringing books to towns and villages that don’t have libraries. They had three children together: Absentia, an aspiring lawyer, Frostbite, an aspiring ice hockey player, and Maud, an aspiring actress.

After eighteen years of non-stop traveling and being away from his siblings, Stargazer, thirty-five years of age, finally returned to Las Vegas to see his thirty-four-year-old sister, who became a nun for the local church. Firefly begged for him and his family to stay in Las Vegas permanently. He asked his wife and children if they want to live in Las Vegas and they agreed. It been only a week in their new permanent home and already things had gotten complicated.
The body of a young woman was found in a hotel room. The police ruled the death an accident. Everything within the city goes back to normal, if only for a while. As it turned out, Firefly met the woman who died. She was an escort who had came to the church to confess. Stargazer, armed with his wits, slyness, and gentlemanly charms, took it upon himself to solve the mysterious death. However, as the death count raise, so does the suspicion around Stargazer.

Anyways, that's all. I'll upload the first chapter soon.
